What does it mean when my Whirlpool Hybrid Electric Heat Pump Water Heater displays “HPO” on the user interface?

CAUTION: Before attempting any corrective actions, ensure the power to the water heater is turned off at the circuit breaker/fuse box to ensure your safety.

INDICATES: Heat pump is out of operation envelope.

What To Do: The “HPO” diagnostic code indicates that the ambient and/or water temperature condition is outside the operational range of the heat pump. This could be due to extremely cold or hot conditions.

  1. Ensure the water heater is installed in a location where the ambient temperature is within the recommended range for heat pump operation.
  2. If the error persists or if you’re unsure about the cause, it’s recommended to contact a qualified technician to service the unit.

Handling electrical components and systems can be risky, especially if you’re not familiar with them. If you’re uncomfortable performing these steps or if the issue continues, please contact customer service at 1-877-817-6750 for further assistance.
