What is vacation mode and when to use it?

If you leave for a vacation anywhere from 1 to 28 days you can set the water heater to vacation mode. The tank temperature will stay heated at around 65°F (18°C).  Furthermore, you can also set the water heater to hold. It will indefinitely hold the temperature you set it at while you are away.

However, if you won’t be using your water heater for 6 months or more we recommend turning off the power and water supply. This is to conserve energy and prevent a build-up of dangerous hydrogen gas.

The water heater and piping should be drained if they might be subject to freezing temperatures while you are away.

After a long shut-down period of 6 months or more, the water heater’s operation and controls should be checked.  It is important to make sure that the water heater is completely filled again before returning to normal use.
