It Works
Using only minimal electricity from the grid, a heat pump draws heat from the air around it to warm the water in your tank. Get all the benefits of a standard water heater with a fraction of the energy usage!
Why do we believe in hybrid water heaters?
A little bit of energy goes a long way with a hybrid heat pump water heater and if every homeowner can not only move to a more electrified lifestyle but also reduce the overall amount of energy they consume, together we can have a big impact on climate change. Hybrids have a slightly higher than average upfront cost to purchase but they pay for themselves in energy savings very quickly. With local utility incentives further reducing the cost, a hybrid will almost always save homeowners money. If you’re switching from a gas tank or tankless water heater, the energy cost savings won’t be as great, but you’ll be helping us all move towards a more energy stable future that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels.
Does the price include installation?
We currently offer professional installation in Oregon and Washington to customers of the following utilities:
- Portland General Electric
- Pacific Power
- Seattle City Light
- Puget Sound Energy
- Snohomish PUD
If you live outside of these areas, you’re still welcome to purchase with no installation and we’ll ship the water heater directly to your door. Shipping is calculated at checkout and you can coordinate installation with the contractor of your choice.
How quickly can my water heater be installed?
Right now we’re booking out about two weeks, but if you have an emergency replacement situation, please reach out and we’ll see what we can do!
Will you dispose of my old water heater?
All water heaters purchased with professional installation include removal, hauling away and proper disposal of the existing water heater being replaced.
Will a hybrid water heater make the room cold?
A heat pump or hybrid water heater transfers heat from the surrounding air to the water. As a result, it will produce cool, dry exhaust air. Today’s hybrid water heaters have the capability to run in 2 modes. The first mode is heat pump mode, this is the most energy-efficient mode. The second is conventional electric resistance mode. The second mode is less energy efficient than the first mode.
However, when operating in heat pump mode, it does not heat water as fast as conventional electric resistance heaters. This is most especially true when the water heater is recovering after significant usage.
Consequently, to maintain performance, hybrid water heaters may switch between the two modes. These two heating modes are why heat pump water heaters are also referred to as “hybrids”.
Hybrids are optimally designed to be installed in unconditioned or semi-conditioned areas. For example, garages or basements. However, if placed in conditioned space, hybrids will produce cool and dry air that is useful in the summer months but will lead to higher heating bills in the winter months. If you think a heat pump water heater is the right product for you but you need to install the hybrid in a conditioned space such as a laundry room, you have the option of ducting the exhaust air outside.
Is the heat pump noisy?
Rheem publishes its decibel ratings at less than 50 decibels. However, in our tests, we’ve seen this vary from home to home. The differences could be because of the acoustics of where the water heater is installed.
In our limited testing, we’ve experienced up to 63 decibels with the heat pump using the Decibel X:dB Sound Level Meter on an iPhone. If you are concerned with the noise that the heat pump makes when in operation, we highly encourage that you run your own tests. Check various appliances and/or different white noise levels to have an idea about noise levels.

Why does electrification matter?
Scientists agree we need to cut our heat trapping emissions to zero by 2050 to avoid the worst effects of climate change. Collectively, our monthly bills for electricity, natural gas and gasoline add up to BILLIONS of dollars every year spent on fossil fuels. Through a combined effort to clean up our electricity generation and eliminating the burning of fossil fuels within residential homes, we can drastically improve our outlook. Small, every day choices from each individual can add up to have a massive impact. We’re here to help make some of those choices easier.
Is a hybrid water heater the right choice for you?
Hybrid water heaters are more well suited to some installation locations than others.
Individual savings can vary based on your energy source, costs, and usage.

We enjoyed working with Zwell co-founders Chelsea and Shilo. They helped us understand the long-term benefits of a hybrid water heater, particularly the efficiency of the heater and the reduced energy costs. This information led us to choosing the Rheem ProTerra hybrid water heater. The initial installation was not perfect due to the need to adapt the water heater plumbing to the house plumbing, but they worked with us to get it right. The water heater was installed in the basement, so noise from the compressor took getting used to, but is not bad. The EcoNet app is a potential benefit for those who travel, allowing control of the heater if you are away from home. It was a real energy-saver for us on a recent trip away from the house for a week.
